Patient Pathway Milestones

Milestones are the patient tracker’s way of clearly showing which ‘stage’ of a patient’s pathway they are on at any point in time. They are assigned by:

• If there are no events that are ‘ongoing’ (e.g. an outpatient appointment which has not been outcomed), the type of the most recent event will determine which milestone the patient is in

• If there is one only one ‘ongoing’ event on the pathway, the type of this event will determine which milestone the patient is in

• If there is more than one ‘ongoing’ event on the pathway, the type of the most significant event will determine which milestone the patient is in.

We rank the ‘significance’ of an event type - i.e. how likely it is this type of event will contribute to delays - form most significant, as follows:

• Treatment (Surgery, Therapies & Other Treatment/RTT Change events)

• MDT

• Diagnostic (Imaging events)

• Follow Up (Outpatient follow-up appointment events)

• First contact (Outpatient First appointment events)

• Referral (Referral Received events)

If there are no ongoing events, then the milestone is the type of the most recent event. The KPIs are calculated based on the start date of the first event in the milestone.

Tip

Events are ‘ongoing’ or ‘completed’ based on their status, and is is the type of events which are open or the last ones which were closed which determines which milestone a patient is in. The table below shows how we see whether an event is ‘ongoing’ or ‘completed’.
